Vikings can't hide their Aaron Rodgers interest by wildly overpaying in free agency

The Minnesota Vikings are trying their best to take the offseason championship crown from the Chicago Bears, overpaying for several free agents to begin a chaotic week. While the Green Bay Packers have added two players at areas of need, the Vikings pulled out the credit card and went on a wild spending spree.

Everything except for adding a quarterback.

Along with re-signing Aaron Jones and Byron Murphy, the Vikings have made a busy start to free agency.

According to various reports, they kicked off Tuesday by signing former Pro Bowl defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, as well as guard Will Fries. This follows on from Monday's work when they landed cornerback Isaiah Rodgers and another former Indianapolis Colts lineman, center Ryan Kelly.

The Allen deal was particularly notable, handing him a three-year, $60 million contract after the Washington Commanders released him last week. Yes, you read that correctly. Allen is a former Pro Bowler, but Washington felt it was time to move on for a reason, and the Vikings are paying big money to bring him in.

They are also reportedly paying Fries $88 million over five years.

Minnesota is going all-in. But why?

Vikings' lack of quarterback moves makes their Aaron Rodgers interest painfully obvious

The Vikings are aggressively upgrading a roster that went 14-3 last season, but the quarterback who led them there? Gone. Sam Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

Are the Vikings willing to hand the keys of an all-in, Super Bowl-ready team to J.J. McCarthy? A quarterback with zero NFL snaps and coming off a season-ending injury? It doesn't add up.

Enter... Aaron Rodgers?

His name continues to come up regarding the Vikings' potential quarterback vacancy. Within the past few days, various reports indicated Minnesota could turn to Rodgers if it can't work out a new deal with Daniel Jones.

The Vikings have made moves to upgrade their offensive line in free agency, which bodes well for whichever player is under center.

While Rodgers would have to follow the Brett Favre career arc of going from Packers hero to villain by swapping green and gold for purple, Minnesota might present the best landing spot.

The Vikings only lost three regular-season games last season and have a playoff roster. With the right quarterback, they could level up to Super Bowl contenders.

They didn't need to go big and overpay in free agency, especially with a 22-year-old quarterback who needs time to settle into a starting job. Well, unless J.J. McCarthy isn't going to be the starter. And let's be honest: Daniel Jones isn't an upgrade over Sam Darnold for an all-in season.

The Vikings are loading up and attempting to win now, proving they need a veteran signal-caller who can take them further than Darnold.

That sounds like a job for Aaron Rodgers.
