Round 2: Quinten Rollins (CB)

If you’re watching the positional designations, this may confuse you. But your eyes aren’t deceiving you, it is a second straight corner taken for Green Bay.

Again, this doesn’t make sense … at first.

Why grab two corners back-to-back, when so many other positions could have been added to?

Well, corner IS one of the most important positions on a defense these days. With offenses passing more often, your team needs to be able to put out enough quality players to defend against it.

Why select someone so high when he doesn’t have much experience?

For backstory on that first: Rollins only played one season of college football, spending the three preceding years on the basketball court.

For the original question, I have a simple answer: because they could.

The lack of a long list of needs to fill allows a team like Green Bay to select guys who may not immediately have a large impact. Even so, he was brought in at one of the supposed needs they did have anyway; it may not be right away, but he’s part of the plan for the future at cornerback.

By grabbing Rollins, Green Bay had already filled up the two previously vacated secondary spots left open by Davon House and Tramon Williams; that left one less “pressing” position demanding attention going forward, with seven other picks still on the board to work with for the remainder of the draft.

All in all, a decent pick with some exciting long-term potential for the Packers.

Once this kid gets himself some more coaching and time learning the game, we could have ourselves yet another great secondary piece in Green Bay.

As usual.
