Round 3: ILB Kentrell Brothers, Missouri

The Packers need to address the inside linebacker position at some point. With Clay Matthews expected to move back outside, someone needs to step up inside. Sam Barrington’s return will help as will the continued development of Jake Ryan, but the Packers need to continue to add talent.

If Kentrell Brothers falls to the Packers in the third round, he would make sense. Brothers is a smart player that always seems to be around the football. He has good awareness and can quickly diagnose plays. Green Bay needs a thumper in the middle of the field, and Brothers can be that guy. His toughness would make him a worthy selection in the third.

Holding Brothers back is his lack of speed and athleticism, but he more than makes up for this with his awareness, instincts and tackling ability. His ability to recognize the play quickly and get after the ball carrier would help the run defense from day one.

More importantly, adding a thumping linebacker on the inside would allow Matthews to do what he does best and that’s get after the quarterback from an outside position. The Packers must address this position at some stage, and Brothers in the third round would be a good move.
