Center

Starter: Corey Linsley

In this role-reversal of fortunes, Corey Linsley was in the right place at the right time in 2014. As a rookie out of Ohio State, he was pegged to be the backup to J.C. Tretter at center. But a week before the start of the regular season, Tretter went down with an injury, forcing the Packers to turn to their rookie to snap the ball to MVP Aaron Rodgers.

Linsley was not only up to the challenge, but played so well that he continued to be the starter even after Tretter was healthy and hasn’t given up the starting position since.

Ironically, when Linsley went down for a few games in 2015, it was Tretter who stepped in to take over for Linsley.

Tretter, one of the most versatile of all linemen on this Packers roster, is also a free agent after this coming year.

He may be one of those backups who get re-signed to a more modest contract than those that would have to be shelled out to the current starters who are also free agents. Tretter will be a valued backup in 2016 and could find his way onto the field at any line position should the injury bug start biting.

His play at center in place of Linsley last year was superb, giving the Packers two players at the position who could easily start for other teams in the league.

Our guess is that Tretter will be re-signed at some point by Thompson. Finding players of his caliber is difficult, and because we all know Thompson likes to re-sign his own guys, Tretter is a prime target for a long-term deal that could keep him in Green Bay.

Expect to see a lot of Tretter in the preseason – and at various positions – to get him prepared for any emergency.
