Green Bay Packers: Pre-combine seven-round mock draft
Seventh round (7-29): TE Blake Jarwin, Oklahoma State
This 6-foot-5, 248-pound was utilized as a fullback, traditional in-line tight end, slot receiver and was even kicked out wide throughout his career as an Oklahoma State Cowboy.
But though he only caught 41 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns over three seasons as an active player in the Big 12, Jarwin manifested unique movement skills for a man his size.
The first word that comes to mind when watching this hybrid weapon get into his routes is “smooth” with the way he quickly gets upfield and comes down with passes while he’s on the move.
Jarwin’s footwork to make tip-toe grabs along the sideline are proof of his ability to bend and reach for balls outside of his frame.
The ease with which he adjusts to poorly-thrown balls can also be attributed his vine-like 34-inch arms.
What’s also intriguing about the underused tight end is his willingness to lower his shoulder after the catch and drag defenders for extra yardage, although he’ll need to remember to just go down in situations where multiple defenders are trying rip the ball out of his hands.
What Jarwin needs a lot of work on is as a blocker due to his struggles to engage opponents head-on at the point of attack.
Don’t look for him to get much work as a fullback in the pros, but the 22-year-old’s quick feet give him the potential of serving as a reliable help blocker at the line of scrimmage once he improves his physical strength.
As a seventh-round pick, Jarwin should be given an opportunity to make the team as a third-string tight end and eventually unseat Richard Rodgers as Green Bay’s TE2.
