ILB Dont’a Hightower

Ted Thompson rarely makes big splashes in free agency. Dont’a Hightower would certainly be an example of this.

It was surprising to see Hightower hit free agency, as some speculated he may receive the franchise tag from New England.

A Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro in 2016, Hightower is one of the hottest names still on the market, which is exactly why New England are working to bring him back, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

The Packers have been in need of an inside linebacker for just about forever. While Blake Martinez flashed potential as a rookie and Jake Ryan is a solid contributor, Hightower could be the type of impact signing the defense needs.

Gaging Hightower’s market isn’t easy, and he’ll likely draw plenty of interest on day two. His injury history could be used against him in any long-term contract discussions.

It’s the kind of move the Packers rarely make, but it’s certainly one they should.
