Packers 2018 Draft: Top cornerback to Green Bay in NFL Mocks mock draft
The latest NFL Mocks mock draft has the Green Bay Packers selecting Ohio State defensive back Denzel Ward with the 14th overall pick.
The Green Bay Packers need to add more talent to the secondary.
Denzel Ward could be the answer at No. 14 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Ward is arguably the best cornerback entering this year’s draft, and he could be difficult to pass up if he’s still there at No. 14 for the Packers.
You can find the full NFL Mocks mock draft here. Here is what George Stockburger wrote about the pick:
"“Denzel Ward is one of the top defensive backs in the class. Despite being undersized, Ward plays aggressively physical and doesn’t let his size limit his impact. He’ll be a nice fit in the slot, with the ability to kick outside.”"
Iowa’s Josh Jackson has been a popular pick to Green Bay in a number of mock drafts so far this offseason, but NFL.com draft analyst Bucky Brooks actually ranks Ward higher. Ward is Brooks’ top-ranked cornerback.
Daniel Jeremiah agrees, placing Ward at No. 8 in his top 50 overall prospects list. He’s the highest-ranked corner in the rankings.
With that in mind, expecting Ward to still be available when the Packers hit the clock might be wishful thinking. It’s possible a team like Chicago at No. 8 or San Fransisco at No. 9 opts for an upgrade to their secondary.
New general manager Brian Gutekunst needs to add more talent at cornerback this offseason, either via free agency, the draft or a combination of the two. If Ward is available when he makes his first pick in April, Gutekunst could find immediate help to the defensive backfield.
Kevin King flashed potential as a rookie, and Damarious Randall made some big improvements down the stretch. Add in Ward and another depth piece or two, and the position could become a strength in 2018.
Is there a prospect you would rather see the Packers select at No. 14? The latest Lombardi Ave seven-round mock draft has them picking linebacker Tremaine Edmunds in the first round.
