Packers: 5 biggest needs after first wave of free agency
1. Cornerback
If the pass rush improves, so will the secondary. But make no mistake, the Packers need to add cornerbacks this spring. Damarious Randall, arguably the team’s best corner in 2017, is now a member of the Cleveland Browns. The secondary has also lost safety Morgan Burnett.
Kevin King flashed potential as a rookie, but he needs to stay healthy after his debut season was cut short due to a shoulder injury. The Packers are also going to need to count on the likes of Quinten Rollins and Lenzy Pipkins.
Gutekunst has been active in his search for a cornerback. The Packers signed Bears corner Kyle Fuller to an offer sheet, but Chicago matched. Green Bay also reportedly had interest in Rashaan Melvin, but missed out as he joined the Raiders.
There are still some free agent options at cornerback, but the price has to be right. E.J. Gaines is still available and would give the secondary an upgrade, but injuries have been a concern. It’s also possible Gutekunst brings back Davon House or gives former Packer Tramon Williams a call.
The draft is where the Packers will have the chance to find a difference-maker at the position. It’s unlikely Denzel Ward falls to No. 14, but if he drops far enough the Packers could consider trying to trade up for him.
