Much like the cornerback position last year, the Packers are starting over at safety. One of Brian Gutekunst’s first moves as general manager was to trade away starting cornerback Damarious Randall, a first-round pick just three years earlier.
Gutekunst would then trade Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, another first-rounder, to Washington. Two years ago Clinton-Dix was a starter alongside Morgan Burnett, who Gutekunst let walk in free agency last offseason.
Still five weeks away from free agency, there’s a good chance many of the top safeties will be re-signed. But as things stand there could be a number of options for the Packers. If they are to make a big free agency signing, it could come at the safety position.
Six-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro Earl Thomas could be available when free agency begins. He’s one of the best safeties in the NFL and will have a lot of interest around the league, but the Packers have the cap room to make a strong offer.
Considering the amount of talent potentially set to hit free agency, it’s a good year to need a safety.
