3. Move the chains on third down

The Packers were outstanding on third down against the Seahawks, converting nine of their 14 attempts. Davante Adams hauled in the opening touchdown of the game on third-and-long, and he also made a 32-yard reception to help put the game away on third-and-8. All three of Jimmy Graham‘s catches were on third down, two leading to a touchdown later in the drive and the third securing the victory.

That’s how you win games, especially deep in the playoffs. Extend drives and turn three points into seven.

Green Bay couldn’t get anything going on third down in the first meeting with San Francisco, converting just one of its 15 attempts. The offense had no rhythm and the team fell behind early in the game.

This is another reason why they’ll need Jones in this game. Staying ahead of the chains and creating manageable third downs will be the key to extending drives. You’re asking for trouble on third-and-long against this 49ers defense.

If they can find success on third down, the Packers can control the tempo of the game and tire the 49ers defense. It’s easier said than done, of course. According to Team Rankings, the 49ers have the second-best third-down defense, and that’s for a reason.

It will be difficult to match last week’s production on third down, but the Packers need to be a lot better than they were in Week 12.
