Randall Cobb

A year after letting Randall Cobb walk in free agency, the Packers should at least consider offering him a short-term deal to return to Green Bay. Cobb will turn 30 next season, but he could be a relatively cheap option in free agency who would bring plenty of value to the Packers offense, even if he’s just the third or fourth option on the depth chart.

First of all, Cobb has years of experience working with Aaron Rodgers. Outside of Adams, there was a glaring lack of experience in the Packers’ receiving corps this season. In Cobb, Rodgers would have another reliable target who he trusts to be in the right place at the right time.

Cobb put together a strong season as the Dallas Cowboys’ third receiver, catching 55 passes for 828 yards and three touchdowns. Statistically, it was his best season since 2015.

As he so often did in Green Bay, Cobb was excellent after the catch. The Packers didn’t get enough production from their receivers after the catch this season. Cobb had 343 yards after the catch in 2019 and averaged 15.1 yards per reception, a career-best.

With Mike McCarthy taking over as head coach in Dallas, I’m sure re-signing Cobb will be a priority. But with a number of free agents including star receiver Amari Cooper, the Cowboys might not be able to bring him back.

Cobb might not be the top target for the Packers this offseason, but bringing him back on a short-term, cap-friendly deal would make a lot of sense.
