Packers: Five positions that are up for grabs in 2020
1. Inside linebacker
Inside linebacker is another position that could see a lot of change between now and the start of the season.
Brian Gutekunst said on Tuesday that Blake Martinez‘s future was “uncertain” as he’s set to hit free agency next month, but he did have praise for Oren Burks.
“I feel really good about Oren, he’s got to stay healthy,” Gutekunst said. “But he has all the talent in the world to be a productive player for us.”
Gutekunst also praised Ty Summers and Curtis Bolton, who will both be entering their second seasons. Summers played exclusively on special teams this past season, while Bolton missed the entire year due to injury after playing well in the preseason.
If Martinez isn’t re-signed, who will be the starting inside linebacker in Week 1? Despite Gutekunst showing confidence in Burks, he couldn’t get on the field in 2019. Summers and Bolton are unproven with zero regular-season snaps on defense.
The Packers will need to address the position over the next few months. Like edge rusher and safety last year, the top two players on the depth chart might not be on the roster yet. This is a position the Packers have to upgrade during the offseason.
