Packers: Three affordable free agent signings to consider
2. Bashaud Breeland, CB
After playing seven games for the Packers in 2018, Bashaud Breeland signed with the Kansas City Chiefs last offseason. Now a free agent again, the Packers should consider bringing him back.
Cornerback isn’t a major concern right now, but adding depth could be necessary depending on Tramon Williams‘ future. Jaire Alexander and Kevin King are the starters on the outside, but if Williams departs, depth would become a concern. Chandon Sullivan impressed in 2019, but Josh Jackson needs to earn the trust of the coaching staff.
Breeland is coming off a solid year in Kansas City. He played in all 16 games, making two interceptions and defending eight passes. He came up with a big interception in the Super Bowl victory over the 49ers.
Breeland signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Chiefs last offseason. He might be hoping for a long-term contract this summer worth more money. While it’s unlikely he’ll be available for such a low deal again this offseason, his contract should still be affordable for the Packers.
Byron Jones, Chris Harris Jr. and Logan Ryan are the top three cornerbacks in a talented free agency class. They could all land big contracts, potentially impacting the deal Breeland will make.
Breeland is familiar with Pettine’s system and he’d bring experience, which the Packers could lose if Williams isn’t re-signed.
