Round 3 (94): Alex Highsmith, EDGE, Charlotte

Strengthening the pass rush hasn’t been discussed much this offseason, but it shouldn’t be ignored. Being able to rush the passer is key to the success of any defense, and this is a premium position on the roster.

The Packers have a dominant starting duo of Za’Darius and Preston Smith, and the hope is Rashan Gary will take on a bigger role in his second season. But the Packers lost Kyler Fackrell in free agency so ensuring they improve their depth will be key in the draft.

That’s where Charlotte edge rusher Alex Highsmith could come in.

Joe Marino of The Draft Network wrote that Highsmith has the potential to develop into a starting-level outside linebacker:

"“While he lacks ideal size, Highsmith is an urgent defender with enough appeal as a pass rusher and gap-shooter that he projects as a quality subpackage option with the upside of an eventual starter as a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL.”"

Highsmith’s 2019 season was by far his best at Charlotte. He made 14 sacks, 75 tackles, a forced fumble and three passes defended.

Initially, he could step in as the number four edge rusher in Mike Pettine’s defense, allowing him to develop his game under the Smith Bros.
