Packers: Possible targets on Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Draft
By Jesse Fry
Offense
Brycen Hopkins, TE, Purdue
The Packers’ tight end room is in need of some talent. They currently have Robert Tonyan and last year’s draft pick Jace Sternberger, as well as veteran Marcedes Lewis. You would figure the team would try to add some more talent to the room despite drafting Josiah Deguara.
Deguara is undersized and might be able to help fill in the H-back or fullback role currently unoccupied on the roster.
Hopkins has great height and speed for the position (6-feet-4, 4.66 40-yard dash) and comes from a football family as his dad was a former Pro Bowl lineman.
Like most tight ends, Hopkins will need some work learning to block, but he has a lot to work with and would be a great addition in the fifth round.
Saahdiq Charles, OT, LSU
The Packers have had some good luck finding middle-round gems on the offensive line. Josh Sitton, T.J. Lang, David Bakhtiari, and Corey Linsley were all drafted in Rounds 4 or 5.
Charles comes with some off-the-field problems as he was suspended for six games last season. But he was trusted at left tackle to protect Joe Burrow when available and there’s something to be said about that.
Charles could be the next in a long line of middle-round offensive line picks that shine for the Packers.
Joe Reed, WR/RB/KR, Virginia
Many of the same things I said about Antonio Gibson yesterday, apply to Joe Reed. He played both running back and receiver in college but projects best as a receiver in the NFL. Reed has good speed and can help right away on special teams and not just in the return game.
Reed isn’t as explosive as Gibson but offers much of the same versatility. He could offer good value in the sixth round.
Day three doesn’t offer the same sizzle as the first three rounds, but this is where the core of the roster will be built and there are gems still to be found.
