Packers: 5 potential replacements for Aaron Jones in 2021
1. Kenneth Gainwell
Kennett Gainwell is one of the most exciting running backs in the entire class and looks to be a perfect fit in Matt LaFleur’s offense.
Gainwell is an explosive runner and also an excellent receiver, something the Packers will lack if Jones leaves in free agency. He opted out of the 2020 season, but in ’19 had 1,459 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, along with 51 receptions for 610 yards and three touchdowns.
Gainwell is a home-run hitter and could also line up in the slot. He can play on all three downs and be used in a number of creative ways. Whether he’s running between the tackles, catching passes out of the backfield, or lining up in the slot, LaFleur could find many ways to get the ball in Gainwell’s hands.
Joe Marino of The Draft Network wrote that “Gainwell has the potential to become the focal point of an NFL backfield as a multifaceted weapon”.
With Dillon’s power and Gainwell’s explosiveness, the Packers could have one of the best 1-2 punches at running back even after losing Jones.
LaFleur loves his running backs to be able to catch passes. Gainwell is one of the best in this year’s class and can be a three-down back for the Packers.
