3. Packers should extend Davante Adams’ contract

It’s somewhat surprising this hasn’t happened already. A Davante Adams contract extension is good news for everyone. Adams gets long-term commitment and guaranteed money. The Packers don’t risk losing their star wide receiver next offseason when he’s scheduled to become a free agent, and they can also structure the deal to save some cap room in 2021.

The Packers do a good job of re-signing their star players a year or so before they become free agents. Last season, they worked out contract extensions with left tackle David Bakhtiari and defensive tackle Kenny Clark way ahead of free agency. It would be a good idea to make a similar move with Adams.

The longer it goes on, his value could continue to increase. What the Packers don’t want to happen is to reach next offseason without working out a deal, which could bring the franchise tag into play to not lose Adams.

Maybe Adams is still thinking about his future. He did say this offseason that his future could “potentially” be impacted by what happens with Aaron Rodgers. But it’s also possible that he’d be willing to work out an extension like other players have in recent months.

If the Packers plan to re-sign Adams, the sooner a deal is agreed, the better.
