Rashan Gary enjoys breakout game with three sacks

The Lions have invested a lot into their offensive line in recent years, but they didn’t show it in their season opener against the 49ers.

Jared Goff was sacked three times and the 49ers recorded nine quarterback hits. According to Pro Football Focus, the Lions allowed 33 pressures in the game, including 19 quarterback hurries.

With Za’Darius Smith limited due to a back injury, Rashan Gary had to step up in the season opener, and he played well despite not have many pass-rushing opportunities.

If the Packers get ahead in this game, the Lions will be forced to throw often. That’s when their shaky pass protection will come under pressure.

Gary didn’t get a sack against the Saints but played well. There should be more opportunities to rush the passer this week, and that’s great news for the Packers’ third-year edge rusher.

This could be a breakout season for the former 12th-overall pick, and it starts here. After making the most of his 16 pass-rush snaps last week, Gary is going to have a huge day with three sacks.

Hopefully Za’Darius Smith will be closer to 100 percent and able to play more snaps, but even if he is still limited, Gary is going to have a big role to play.
