Packers: 3 dream free-agent targets to go all-in for 2022
S Tyrann Mathieu
Likely to happen? Far from it. But Tyrann Mathieu would be a dream addition for the Packers and a true sign they are willing to go all-in for 2022.
A three-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro, Mathieu is still one of the best safeties in the league. The position could be an under-the-radar need for the Packers as Darnell Savage didn’t have a great 2021 season, and the depth behind the two starters is a concern. A trio of Mathieu, Savage, and Adrian Amos would be as good as any.
In his three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Mathieu has made 27 pass defenses and 13 interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns.
Mathieu also offers a ton of versatility. According to Pro Football Focus, “Mathieu has played over 600 snaps in deep, box and slot alignments” in his three seasons with the Chiefs.
Being able to afford to sign Mathieu is a different question entirely. Spotrac’s market value projection has Mathieu earning a deal worth $14.8 million per year. It would require some salary-cap magic from the Packers to pull it off. But that’s why it would be a dream move.
The Packers’ defense saved their best football for the playoffs. If they somehow managed to sign Mathieu, this unit could take a huge step up in 2022.
