Round 2 (59): Travis Jones, DL, UConn

So far in this mock draft, the Packers have improved at inside linebacker and in the secondary. Now it’s time to get Kenny Clark some help along the defensive line. This is one of the Packers’ biggest needs this offseason and one they should address in the early rounds.

UConn defensive tackle Travis Jones could be an instant upgrade for the Packers up front. GM Brian Gutekunst loves to draft excellent athletes, and he would be getting exactly that from Jones. Jones has a RAS (Relative Athletic Score) of 9.37, which ranks 85th out of 1,343 defensive tackles dating back to 1987, according to Kent Lee Platte. Pretty incredible.

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah wrote that Jones was one of the standout performers at the Senior Bowl:

"“Jones was probably the most physically dominant player in Mobile. He consistently showed pure power. At 6-4 and 326 pounds, he was walking offensive linemen back to the quarterback the entire week.”"

For the Packers’ defense to take that next step, they need more consistency along the defensive line. Dean Lowry is coming off his best season, while T.J. Slaton also showed promise in his rookie year.

But the work to get Kenny Clark more help should continue in the draft, and Travis Jones could provide that if he’s still on the board in the second round. I’d love to see what he could do in Green Bay.
