Round 2 (53): Nik Bonitto, EDGE, Oklahoma

Still no wide receiver. Again, don’t worry. The Packers will leave this mock draft with all the help they need at the position. In the meantime, we focus on strengthening another position of need at edge rusher.

In starters Rashan Gary and Preston Smith, the Packers have a strong duo. That’s great, but with Za’Darius Smith now playing for the Minnesota Vikings, depth is a real issue on the edge. Championship defenses have more than two talented pass rushers.

Enter Oklahoma’s Nik Bonitto.

Bonitto is a great athlete. He has an RAS of 9.3 out of 10. He was also a dominant pass rusher in college, earning Pro Football Focus’ third-highest pass-rush grade among Power 5 edge defenders since 2011. Only Chase Young and Myles Garrett had higher grades. The other two players in the top five were Nick and Joey Bosa.

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah wrote that if Bonitto “adds some strength, he could emerge as a Pro Bowl talent”.

Getting to learn behind Gary and Smith, Bonitto would be the Packers’ third-best pass rusher as a rookie but, in time, could become a key starter in Joe Barry’s defense. In the second round, Bonitto could be a home-run pick at a position of need.
