One surprise from the draft was that the Packers didn’t strengthen their safety depth.

Seventh-round pick Tariq Carptener played safety in college, but head coach Matt LaFleur said the plan is to move him to inside linebacker. In any case, Carpenter’s biggest role early on will come on special teams.

When fully healthy, Green Bay’s secondary is among the best in the league. However, injuries could quickly derail that, mostly at safety.

The Packers’ starting two safety positions are set. Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage give the defense a solid pairing at the position.

Where Green Bay needs help is at the third safety spot.

Sure, picking Quay Walker in the first round likely means the Packers will play with two inside linebackers more frequently.

But if either Amos or Savage misses any time due to injury, does this defense have a safety ready to step into a starting position?

That’s where Jaquiski Tartt could come in.

The former second-round pick has spent seven seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, starting 64 games in that time. He is a talented, experienced safety who would fill the No. 3 position and give the Packers all-important depth.

Tartt would be an affordable addition. A year ago, the 49ers signed Tartt to a one-year deal worth $1.13 million, per Spotrac. His cap hit was just $987,500.
