Royce Newman started 16 games at guard as a rookie. It was an impressive first year in Green Bay. Newman had ups and downs, but overall, he was good enough to start each week.

However, Newman did lose his starting job in the regular season finale and then played just three snaps in the playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, all of which were on special teams.

Lucas Patrick’s departure helps Newman’s chances of regaining a starting job, but there will be a ton of competition.

Jon Runyan Jr. is a frontrunner to land a starting job again in 2022. Newman will also face competition from rookies Sean Rhyan, Zach Tom, and Rasheed Walker.

All three rookies have the versatility to play across the line, but guard could be the ideal spot for each of them.

Newman struggled early last season but did show significant improvements as he gained experience. If he can continue to build on those performances, he will be a frontrunner in the competition for a starting job.

However, with the Packers’ improved depth, the competition should be wide open. Winning a starting job will be anything but easy.

Matt LaFleur will always pick his best five. That could include Newman in 2022, but he will need to perform well over the summer.
