The Packers were always likely only to keep two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but the decision to release Kurt Benkert only reinforces that.

It would take something special from Danny Etling to make the roster this summer.

Green Bay doesn’t need to keep a third-string QB on the 53. Etling will likely land on the practice squad and can be called up if needed during the regular season.

PUP: Kylin Hill

It’s possible the Packers keep four running backs on the 53 for added depth, but there might not be any need.

Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon dominated the carries last season and there’s no reason to change that. Their styles complement each other perfectly.

Patrick Taylor filled in for injuries last season, making 89 yards and a touchdown from his 23 carries. He played well enough to deserve another shot on the 53-man roster.

Kylin Hill is likely the preferred choice as the Packers’ top backup, but he is still recovering from a torn ACL. If he isn’t ready to go by Week 1, he could begin the season on the PUP list.

Players who start the season on the PUP list are required to miss four games. Previously, it had been six.
