Ranking Packers’ four possible playoff opponents in wild-card round
1. San Francisco 49ers
If the Packers secure the seventh seed this week, their most likely wild-card opponent is the San Francisco 49ers. San Francisco currently holds the second seed, and will clinch it with victory over the Arizona Cardinals and if the Eagles win or tie.
San Francisco is 4-0 against Green Bay in the playoffs during the Aaron Rodgers era. The 49ers eliminated the Packers in the 2012, ’13, ’19, and ’21 seasons. Understandably, this is the matchup most Packers fans want to avoid.
The 49ers’ defense ranks second in the NFL for yards allowed and first in points allowed. Their defense is dominant. They also own the fifth-ranked offense.
Even with rookie quarterback Brock Purdy starting the past four games, the Niners continue to dominate.
He is surrounded by star talent, including running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, and tight end George Kittle.
Purdy has thrown for 1,196 yards, 10 touchdowns, and four interceptions, leading the 49ers to a 4-0 record in games he has started.
San Francisco is the hottest team in football, having won nine games in a row.
Could the Packers slow down a dominant 49ers offense? Could they score against the best defense in the league?
Unfortunately, a matchup at Levi’s Stadium could end in another playoff exit to the 49ers.
