Jordan Love and Malik Willis will resume their roles as the Green Bay Packers' top two quarterbacks, but the competition behind them leaves a former draft pick on thin ice.
Sean Clifford's position on the depth chart has moved in the wrong direction since this time last year, and he enters the start of organized team activities with everything to prove.
Clifford barely edged out Michael Pratt in an underwhelming quarterback battle last summer, but in reality, they both lost. Neither gave the Packers enough confidence that they could handle backup duties, instead forcing Brian Gutekunst to make a trade for Malik Willis after the preseason.
It was a season-saving move, as Willis led the Packers to three crucial victories. Sending a seventh-rounder to the Tennessee Titans looked better by the day.
Clifford isn't likely to win back the No. 2 job any time soon, but he may have to look over his shoulder in another quarterback battle this summer.
The team acted swiftly to sign Taylor Elgersma after the draft, and he is a player to watch closely.
Packers' Taylor Elgersma move piles the pressure on Sean Clifford at OTAs
The Packers had to fight off competition for Elgersma's signature, including from the Buffalo Bills.
Having hosted him for a tryout during their rookie minicamp, the Packers had clearly seen enough and moved fast to sign him before anyone else could. LaFleur must've liked what he saw from the quarterback who won the Hec Crighton Trophy last season, Canada's equivalent of the Heisman.
Elgersma was the only quarterback at Green Bay's rookie minicamp, which meant he got extensive work with LaFleur and the coaching staff.
Is he ready for regular-season reps? Almost certainly not, but that makes the No. 3 job particularly appealing. It would allow him to develop and learn in the same quarterback room as Love and Willis without the pressures of being one injury away from playing.
Clifford offers plenty to the quarterback room. He is a smart player and can help the starter on game days, especially relating to the game plan and breaking down tape in real-time. But can he ever become a quality, reliable backup? That's a major question.
Elgersma has that potential. Maybe not this year, but in the future.
If Elgersma impresses this summer, it will make sense to find room on the roster to avoid losing him on waivers. That would put Clifford's spot in jeopardy.
The Packers' former draft pick must step up to the challenge to prove he isn't in line for another demotion on the depth chart, and it starts at OTAs. The pressure is on.
