Packers can derail the Vikings' Kyler Murray era before it even truly begins

While the Green Bay Packers qualified for the postseason last year, they watched the Minnesota Vikings implode. Sure, the dreaded NFC North foe finished with a winning record but failed to make the playoffs in part because it lacked consistency at quarterback. Sophomore J. J. McCarthy was supposed to be the long-term answer behind center but left much to be desired in his sophomore campaign. Not surprisingly, the Vikes decided to sign Kyler Murray in the offseason.

Murray is coming off a Lisfranc injury that forced him to sit out a good chunk of 2025. However, he's previously shown he can play at a high level and will ultimately be a substantial upgrade over McCarthy. Having said that, the Packers also have a pretty good quarterback in Jordan Love and more than enough talent on defense to contain Murray.

And after the NFL dropped the schedule for the 2026 season, Green Bay at last knows when it will wreck the beginning of Murray's era in Minnesota.

The Packers will face Kyler Murray and the Vikings in the season opener

The league gave the Packers a gift when it announced that they'll face the division rival Minnesota in the season opener. That's right, they'll get the first crack at spoiling Murray's debut with the Vikings.

The first overall pick in 2019, Murray spent seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before he was cut earlier this year. He promptly bolted for the Vikings, where he'll have a chance to resurrect his career under Kevin O'Connell.

While Murray played at a top-10 level several times throughout his stint in the desert, he wasn't consistent enough to be the long-term answer behind center. This is why newly-hired head coach Mike LaFleur didn't hesitate to move on from him.

The downside of facing the Vikes so early in the season is that Green Bay will likely be without star pass rusher Micah Parsons, so Murray won't face nearly as much heat. On the other hand, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst did a good job of fortifying the defensive trenches by signing defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and later drafting Chris McClellan.

On top of that, the team's brass bolstered the pass rush with Dani Dennis-Sutton. When you add it all up, Green Bay will have more than enough talent to contain Murray.

There's no doubt that the Packers have a favorable matchup, but the worst thing they can do is overlook Murray. After all, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has managed to get the most out of virtually every quarterback he's worked with but McCarthy.

For this reason, nobody would bat an eye if Murray enjoys a career revival in Minneapolis. This is especially feasible when you consider that he'll be throwing passes to the receiver trio of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and the recently signed Jauan Jennings.

The Minnesota defense could also give Jordan Love trouble even after trading pass rusher Jonathan Greenard to the Philadelphia Eagles, because Dallas Turner proved in 2025 that he can also wreak havoc across the line of scrimmage.

The truth is that this may prove to be a tough matchup, but the prospect of handing Murray his first loss with the Vikings could incentivize the Packers to give it all and come out on top in the opener.
