The Green Bay Packers have a cornerback problem. It's not just fan panic, either, as it sure seems like the team agrees.

According to Easton Butler of Packer Report, the Packers had "spoken to the Browns" about a potential deal for Greg Newsome "several times this year." That dream is now over.

As reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Browns have instead traded Newsome to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and they basically gave him away. It's hard to imagine the Packers couldn't have made a similarly competitive offer.

Per Schefter, Cleveland will receive a seventh-round pick and cornerback Tyson Campbell, while sending Newsome and a sixth-round choice to Jacksonville.

It's a strange move for the Browns, who have actually received the lower draft pick and arguably the worst cornerback. Campbell has struggled this season for the Jaguars. According to Pro Football Focus, he has allowed 19 catches for 312 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception for a 107.0 passer rating in his coverage.

It feels more like a financial decision for the Browns, who may not have been able to afford to extend Newsome's contract, which expires at the end of the season.

And that's why the Packers should've made an offer.

Whether Green Bay included a player in return or just offered a package of Day 3 picks, it's hard to imagine a deal not being possible. The Browns would likely have preferred to send Newsome to an NFC team, especially with the Packers not on their schedule again for several years.

It's a missed opportunity for Green Bay, given its concerns at cornerback. Of course, it's hard to be too critical of general manager Brian Gutekunst in the trade market. We can no longer accuse him of not making big moves after he pulled off the heist of the century to land Micah Parsons.

But Newsome would've been a smart addition to a team with Super Bowl ambitions. This is a move the Packers should've made.
