With the 2026 NFL Draft right around the corner, the Green Bay Packers have made a few moves to clear some roster space heading into this year's festivities, which kick off on Thursday night from Pittsburgh.
Barring a trade, of course, Green Bay won't begin the process until Friday's second round at No. 52 overall, as the organization traded its first-rounder to the Dallas Cowboys last August in the deal that brought Micah Parsons to Titletown.
To clear some roster space, the Packers have announced that they've released three players, cutting ties with tight end McCallan Castles, cornerback Tyron Herring, and linebacker Jamon Johnson.
These certainly aren't big losses, as Johnson was the only player of the three to take a regular-season snap for the Packers in 2025. Undrafted a year ago, the former Georgia Bulldog and Kentucky Wildcat ultimately appeared in two games for Green Bay, recording 10 total tackles, all of which came during the regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings.
Herring went undrafted out of Delaware last year and played some solid football during the preseason, even making a game-saving hit at the goal line that helped the Packers score a win over the Indianapolis Colts. Nevertheless, he was released ahead of the regular season and later signed with the New England Patriots as a member of the practice squad. He was later released by the Pats and returned to Green Bay on the practice squad, was released again, and then again rejoined the Packers' practice squad.
McCastles, who spent time with Cal, UC Davis, and Tennessee during his collegiate career, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2024 but was waived during training camp. He spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers' practice squad during that '24 season and then spent roughly two weeks with the Los Angeles Rams in August 2025 before being waived. He was signed to the Packers' practice squad shortly after Tucker Kraft was lost for the year with a torn ACL.
Packers now have the ability to add 16 players to the 90-man roster
So, here's how things shake out for the Packers heading into the draft.
After releasing Johnson, Herring, and McCastles, Green Bay has 75 players under contract. One of those, however, is defensive end Dante Barnett, who's part of the International Pathway Program and doesn't count toward the 90-man roster.
As such, the Packers now have the ability to add 16 players to the roster. At the time of this writing, Green Bay has eight picks in the draft after recently trading wideout Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Assuming that number stays the same, the Packers can sign those eight picks, while also adding another eight undrafted free agents.
