While it is funny for Green Bay Packers fans to constantly dunk on the Chicago Bears for their historic ineptitude at the quarterback position, there is reason to be at least slightly nervous about the idea of No. 1 pick Caleb Williams finding his groove under new head coach Ben Johnson.
While Williams' solid preseason may give Bears fans some extra optimism that he has finally figured it out, there are some signs that his biggest issue could still be prevalent enough to ruin his 2025 season.
Williams took multiple bad sacks this preseason, including one that got Johnson particularly annoyed because Caleb held the ball for five seconds before eventually running into a sack. This sounds like rookie year Williams, and Johnson was none too pleased.
Johnson publicly ripped Williams for the poor sack, claiming that he had "good protection" after the pocket lasted for as long as five seconds. This sounds like a quote that was pulled straight from the 2024 season, which could tell the Packers that Williams is not as far along in his development as some hopeful Bears fans want to imagine.
Packers fans will like Bears QB Caleb Williams taking bad sacks in preseason
Williams was sacked an outrageous 68 times in the 2024 season. While some of that was clearly due to a terrible offensive line, Williams didn't help the situation by holding onto the ball. This is not only his biggest issue as a Bear, but it was a flaw of his during his starring days at USC.
The Bears went all-in on getting Williams one of the best offensive lines in the league, signing center Drew Dalman in free agency while trading for two new starting guards in Jonah Jackson and former Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Joe Thuney. However, Williams' issues persist.
If Williams isn't able to get the ball out quickly for a coach in Johnson who has shown to have a very low tolerance for his quarterback making mistakes, the Packers can rest easy knowing that they can enter yet another season without regarding the Bears as much of an NFC North contender.
Williams has the arm talent and playmaking ability to make the Packers look foolish, but he is far from a finished product at this point in time. Expect a few more bad sacks in key spots from Williams before he can fix this once and for all.
