The Green Bay Packers transformed the safety position for first-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley last offseason. They are taking steps to do the same at cornerback.
It starts by moving on talent. Brian Gutekunst replaced almost the entire safety room last offseason, and a similar approach at corner has already seen Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochell walk out the door. Jaire Alexander could be next.
The Packers signed Nate Hobbs, who will rotate snaps between the boundary and slot.
It's now over to Gutekunst to restock the team's cornerback depth and find a starter to play alongside Hobbs and Keisean Nixon. Keep a close eye on Mississippi's Trey Amos.
Packers meet with Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos (again) ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft
The Packers are doing their homework on the top cornerback prospects, with many rumors pointing to Kentucky's Maxwell Hairston. Amos may also be near the top of Green Bay's list.
Last month, Packer Report's Easton Butler reported that "several" Packers scouts were "heavily watching" Amos at the Ole Miss pro day.
It must've gone well because Green Bay continues to show interest. Butler now reports that the Packers will host Amos for an official Top 30 visit.
We should take it seriously. Unlike in the Ted Thompson era, when the Packers didn't give much away with their Top 30 visits, Gutekunst typically uses them to learn more about his top targets. Under Gutey, Green Bay has drafted several prospects it brought in for visits. Last year, that list included Edgerrin Cooper, Ty'Ron Hopper, and Kitan Oladapo.
Amos is clearly on the Packers' radar, and he should be.
He is a phenomenal athlete and has the length Green Bay covets. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound cornerback has experience in press coverage and could be a Day 1 starter in Hafley's system.
Hafley's vision-based defense allows defensive backs to read the quarterback and make plays on the ball. It helped Xavier McKinney reach All-Pro status after his eight-interception season in 2024. Amos also gets to the football, having made three interceptions and 13 pass defenses in his final year for Mississippi.
Few cornerbacks in this year's class would fit the Packers' defense as well as Amos. Whether they can get him at No. 57 or have to make a move earlier remains to be seen, but it's unsurprising to see Green Bay take a strong interest.
