A Packers-Josh Sweat trade proposal the Cardinals couldn't turn down

A potential Green Bay Packers trade for pass-rusher Josh Sweat suddenly feels like a real possibility.

On Tuesday afternoon, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Arizona Cardinals have received calls about a potential trade for Sweat. In the post, Schultz highlighted that Sweat had a "close relationship" with Jonathan Gannon.

Gannon is now the defensive coordinator in Green Bay. If Sweat wants to reunite with the coach who helped him become a Pro Bowler, the Packers may have a chance. But what would it cost?

Here's a deal the Cardinals would have a hard time turning down:

Packers should be willing to offer a third-round pick to land Josh Sweat

The Packers don't hold a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft thanks to the Micah Parsons trade, but they have no shortage of draft capital in the later rounds.

Based on the latest compensatory pick projections from Over The Cap, Green Bay could enter next year's draft with a Round 2 pick, a Round 3 pick, four Round 4 picks, two Round 5 picks, a Round 6 pick, and two Round 7 picks. That's a total of 11 selections.

That makes it far easier to give away a third-rounder for a pass-rusher with Pro Bowl talent.

Sweat has dominated in Gannon's system. They have spent three seasons together, two in Philadelphia and one in Arizona, with Sweat featuring in 49 games with 46 starts. In that time, he tallied 30.5 sacks and 43 quarterback hits. From a sack total perspective, three of Sweat's top four seasons came in Gannon's defense.

That's exactly why the Packers should consider handing over a third-round pick.

For Arizona, it's a premium draft choice for a player who is reportedly "not particularly happy," according to Cardinals insider Kyle Odegard. Sweat hasn't attended the voluntary offseason workouts so far this spring.

The Cardinals are rebuilding. They still don't have their quarterback. Adding a third-round pick could be huge in helping them land one of the top QBs next year if they fail to land a top-five selection. That third-rounder could help them trade up, if necessary. It would be excellent value for Arizona.

It sure can't hurt that Matt LaFleur's brother, Mike, is the new head coach in Arizona. It's not that simple, of course, as it would be the general managers negotiating a deal, but it can only help.

And if Sweat wants to reunite with Gannon, the Packers should make it happen. A third-round pick is a fair price to pay for a pass-rusher who has already made a Pro Bowl while playing under Gannon.

Sweat has hit double-digit sacks twice in the past four seasons. Now imagine what he could do in a scheme that has brought the best out of him and with Parsons taking double teams on the other side of the field.
