Packers have a painfully obvious trade chip (and it's not Jaire Alexander)

The Packers would be taking a big risk trading a wide receiver, but it might just be the right call at this point.

As we inch closer and closer to the 2025 NFL Draft, it's easy to assume that if the Green Bay Packers opt to trade any player for a few extra picks, it would be Jaire Alexander.

While the two-time Pro Bowler is easily one of the best cornerbacks in the league when healthy, it's his health that's been the issue for quite some time now, as he's missed 34 of a possible 68 regular-season games over the past four years.

And that's obviously not what you want from a guy making an average of $21 million per year. Sure, the Packers would take a sizeable dead-cap hit by dealing (or releasing) him, but the fact is that he's simply become far too unreliable.

Beyond Alexander, though, Green Bay has a few other players who could serve as trade bait, one of which is wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

The Packers might be wise to part ways with Romeo Doubs

Look, it's not as if Doubs doesn't have talent. Because he does.

And for a fourth-round selection, he's posted some fairly solid numbers over his first three seasons, recording 147 catches for 1,700 yards with 15 touchdowns. He had a few drops this past year, but he's got decent hands overall, and there are undoubtedly far worse run blockers in this league at wideout.

That said, however, he's got several issues surrounding him that the Packers could certainly do without.

For starters, there was the one-game suspension in Week 5 of this past season after Doubs missed several days of practice, reportedly due to frustration over how he was being utilized (or not utilized, as the case may be) in the Packers' passing attack.

Naturally, the Nevada alum denied those claims and took the "things going on off the field" approach. To his credit, he stated that he needed to be better about communicating and then went out and scored a pair of touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals in his first game back.

But then there's the concussion issue, as Doubs suffered two of them in the second half of the 2024 season, the first in Week 12 against the San Francisco 49ers and the second in the Packers' playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

And the second one occurred even with the use of a Guardian Cap. So, there's no question that this could be a problem. His overall health, of course, is the bigger concern here, but Green Bay still has to look at things from a football standpoint.

Doubs is currently set to play the 2025 season on the final year of his rookie deal, as the Packers have yet to sign him to an extension. So, the franchise seemingly already has doubts about his future.

Now, there is some risk in trading Doubs, as Christian Watson will likely miss a large chunk of the upcoming season as he continues to recover from the torn ACL he suffered in the regular-season finale against the Chicago Bears.

But one has to assume the Packers will select at least one wideout in this week's draft, perhaps even with one of the hypothetical picks they'd get by dealing Doubs. He'd undoubtedly have a decent market, as there are plenty of teams who need help at receiver, so this is certainly something Green Bay should consider.
