Big Colts injury update gives Packers a chance to shock the world with Malik Willis
Nobody knows what to expect from the Green Bay Packers without Jordan Love.
Backup Malik Willis hasn't started a game in two years and arrived in Green Bay less than three weeks ago. The deck is stacked against him as he prepares to deputize for one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.
However, the Indianapolis Colts, who visit Lambeau Field in Week 2, have their own injury problems, which could make life easier for Willis and the Packers' offense.
Head coach Matt LaFleur must get creative with his gameplan and figure out a way to make his young quarterback comfortable. The Colts' latest injury updates could have a significant impact on the game and increase the likelihood of a Packers upset.
DeForest Buckner among three Colts starters who could miss Packers game
The Colts' first injury report for Week 2 included three key starters on defense: defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, defensive end Kwity Paye, and safety Julian Blackmon. All three missed practice on Wednesday.
Buckner is a three-time Pro Bowler with 32.5 sacks over the past four seasons for the Colts. Paye is a former first-round pick and made 8.5 sacks last year. Blackmon led the team with four interceptions and eight pass defenses in 2023.
Last week against the Houston Texans, Buckner and Paye combined for 2.5 sacks, four quarterback hits, and two tackles for loss. Blackmon made a team-best 10 solo tackles.
It will be a big deal if the Colts lose any of those three players. If they all miss Week 2, it could change the game. Buckner and Paye make up the left side of Indianapolis' defensive line, while Blackmon is a playmaker in the secondary.
Losing this trio wouldn't just impact the passing game but also help Josh Jacobs and the Packers' rushing attack. The Colts allowed 213 rushing yards against Houston last week. While they will likely counter it by stacking the box and forcing Willis to throw, losing Buckner and Paye would make life easier for the Packers' offensive line in run-blocking.
Green Bay needs everything to go in its favor in Week 2. Jeff Hafley's defense must step up and force turnovers. They have to avoid penalties. Even without Love, the Packers must find a way to move the ball, whether on the ground or with Willis making plays. It won't be easy, but the Colts' injury situation is something to monitor and could have a significant impact on the game.
