3 Packers already tumbling down the depth chart at training camp
It's only the second week of training camp, but we've already learned a lot about the Green Bay Packers this summer.
Rookie safeties Javon Bullard and Evan Williams have made an impressive start to life in the NFL, former undrafted free agent Kadeem Telfort has increased his chances of making the 53-man roster, and Jeff Hafley's new-look defense looks great.
While a handful of players have strengthened their grip on roster spots and climbed the depth chart, others haven't made the start to camp they would've hoped for.
These players are falling down the Packers depth chart at training camp
Andre Dillard
The Packers hoped a fresh start could help former first-round pick Andre Dillard reach his potential. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed a league-worst 12 sacks last season, and he hasn't made a great start in Green Bay.
Zach Tom hasn't participated in team drills as he continues his recovery from a torn pec. Green Bay began camp with Dillard starting at right tackle, but he struggled to slow down the pass rush, particularly versus Rashan Gary. There's no shame in losing reps against Gary, but Packer Report's Andy Herman described it as a "massive mismatch."
It seems the Packers agree.
Second-year Kadeem Telfort, who didn't play a single snap in 2023 after going undrafted, has been getting first-team reps in Dillard's place.
The Packers have a good track record of developing offensive tackles, and they may prefer to move forward with Telfort as the swing tackle rather than hoping Dillard can finally turn things around.
Sean Clifford
Missed throws and interceptions have been the concerning theme of Sean Clifford's training camp so far. As of yet, the second-year quarterback hasn't built on a promising preseason from last summer. He will face pressure from rookie Michael Pratt, and the Packers could still sign a veteran to back up Jordan Love.
"From OTAs and minicamp through the first week of training camp, he has been awful," said Andy Herman. "He's had multiple interception days, over and over and over again."
Clifford still has time to turn things around in the preseason, but if he continues to turn the ball over, Pratt will have the opportunity to win the QB2 job.
Sean Rhyan
Matt LaFleur said they would continue to rotate their starting offensive line throughout training camp, but there have been fewer moves than anticipated. For example, first-round pick Jordan Morgan is now playing almost exclusively at right guard and has barely taken any snaps at tackle.
Morgan has practiced with the first team in recent days, suggesting he is currently the top choice at right guard ahead of Sean Rhyan.
With Josh Myers still the preferred starter at center, Elgton Jenkins remains at left guard, which could mean Rhyan is the odd man out in the starting five. Rhyan did play some snaps at center while Myers missed practice, but there hasn't been any indication that he is in serious contention for that job.
Again, as with all positional battles, there's still so much to play for. However, if the season started today, the most likely scenario seems to be Jenkins at left guard, Myers at center, and Morgan at right guard, leaving Rhyan out of the starting lineup.
