CBS Sports grades the Packers

CBS Sports: B+

The authors liked the pick of first-round selection, safety Damarious Randall.

There was a glaring need in the Packers secondary after losing both Tramon Williams and Davon House; and though Ted Thompson is not usually one for disregarding value for need, he saw a chance to marry the two (maybe a tad earlier than everyone expected).

Randall was one of the more intriguing prospects to come out of the combine. With scorching speed and peak performances at the 40-yard dash and the vertical leap, Randall quickly moved up draft boards as the big day approached.

Though some still had him going in the second round, it was widely accepted that he would make a late push into round one. Most mocks had him going one pick earlier, to the Indianapolis Colts.

However, as luck would have it, he fell to the Packers.

A hybrid safety/corner, CBS Sports like the need that was addressed in a unique way. Depth was added to an already young and talented secondary, and a specialty rotation seems the most likely scenario to play out in Dom Capers’ defensive scheme. Though there are few cases of a safety truly making the leap to corner successfully in the NFL, secondary coach Joe Whitt is more than capable of making it happen for the Packers.
