Round 3 – Carroll Phillips, DE, Illinois

Despite re-signing Perry to a five-year deal, the Packers could still use another young athletic pass rusher to develop at outside linebacker. Here at the end of the third round Phillips would be a nice fit with Green Bay.

He offers a lot of speed (4.64) and explosiveness off the edge. He has a quick first step and he’s athletic enough to bend around the corner. While the former Illinois defensive end may only be 6-foot-3 and 246 pounds, he plays with a good motor and his athletic traits are intriguing.

In 2016, he emerged as one of the Big Ten’s top pass rushers, recording 11 sacks as a senior. He’s a smooth enough athlete in space to also drop in coverage.

Overall, he fits well as a 3-4 rush backer, and he could immediately be a third-down pass rush specialist on the Packers defense while he develops his game and competes with Kyler Fackrell for playing time.
