4. Running back

Additions: None

Losses: Eddie Lacy (Seattle), Christine Michael (Free agent)

Ty Montgomery is the only running back on the Packers roster. I repeat: Ty Montgomery is the only running back on the Packers roster. That needs to change.

Montgomery was excellent when he made the full-time switch from wide receiver, but he best serves as the No. 2 behind a power back. The Packers lost that in Eddie Lacy, and Christine Michael looks set to depart, too. He’s still a free agent.

There are a number of options still available in free agency. LeGarrette Blount is an intriguing option, as is Jamaal Charles. Neither would break the bank. I don’t favor a move for Adrian Peterson, however. His production is far worse out of the shotgun, which the Packers operate in the majority of the time. Here is an interesting statistic from ESPN’s Ben Goessling:

"“Peterson has logged only 115 shotgun carries in his career, for 461 yards and three touchdowns, and his nine pistol attempts — all of which came in his last two full seasons — went for just 10 yards”"

That was written before the 2016 season, but Peterson only logged a total of 37 carries all year due to injury. His 1.9 yards-per-attempt average won’t have helped his career numbers out of the shotgun.

Along with free agency, Ted will also have the pick of a talented bunch in the draft. One way or another, the Packers will be adding another running back this spring.

They have to.

Urgency: High
