Jamaal Williams

Williams proved last year that he can be the between-the-tackles runner, while also a threat in the passing game.

Williams led the team in rushing (556 yards) but had a lower yards-per-carry average than rookie teammate Jones (3.6 compared to Jones’ 5.5), although the lack of yards per carry can be attributed to defenses not having to fear Brett Hundley and loading up to stop the run.

Even with Hundley in the lineup, Williams still handled himself well. His best game rushing came against Tampa Bay in Week 13. That day, Williams ran for 113 yards on 21 carries at 5.4 yards per carry, and he also scored a touchdown.

Williams has a big opportunity with Jones’ suspension. If Williams can be more consistent than last year and add more explosive runs, he could be hard to replace once Jones returns. Williams’ running style is the perfect complement to both Montgomery and Jones. He can be the goal-line and between-the-tackles banger to wear down defenses. He also has the perfect style to ride at the end of games to preserve a win.

Williams is also a threat in the passing game. Against the Steelers last year, Williams had four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. His 54-yard catch-and-run was a perfect example of setting up blocks on the screen and then exploding into the clear.

The first two games of the season will be against a tough-and-improved Bears team, and the number one defense in football last year, the Vikings.  If Williams can produce big numbers in the first two weeks, Coach McCarthy will have a tough decision come Week 3.

Prediction: 510 rushing yards, 210 receiving yards, seven total TDs (six rushing, one receiving)
