Tight ends (3)

Jimmy Graham, Jace Sternberger, Robert Tonyan

Yet another tough decision the Packers will have to make is at tight end. A case can be made for keeping Jimmy Graham, Jace Sternbeger, Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis, but there’s a good chance they’ll only be able to keep three on the 53-man roster. I have Lewis missing out just, but he could just as easily make the roster ahead of Tonyan.

Jim Owczarski of Packers News wrote that Tonyan could get more playing time this season. As a result, the Packers might not want to risk losing him by not keeping him on the roster.

The Packers aren’t going to cut Jimmy Graham. Aaron Rodgers believes Matt LaFleur’s offense suits Graham. They’re not going to cut Jace Sternberger, either, who they selected in the third round of April’s draft.

Maybe the Packers will decide to keep four tight ends on the roster, but if they go with three, Lewis might miss out despite the fact he’s the best blocker of the four tight ends.

Again, it’s entirely possible the Packers decide to go with Graham, Lewis and Sternberger. Another possibility is that one of the tight ends gets an injury.

Time will tell, but this will be a difficult decision for Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst.
