Stock up, stock down for Packers after Week 5 win vs. Cowboys
Stock down: Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison
With the Packers’ top wide receiver out, they needed their other pass catchers to step up. Marquez Valdes-Scantling is the clear number two, but he’s not been consistent enough so far. That’s also true for Geronimo Allison.
While Aaron Jones did put up four rushing touchdowns and had an excellent game on the ground, Aaron Rodgers still threw the ball 34 times in Sunday’s win. Of Rodgers’ 22 completions, Valdes-Scantling and Allison combined for just three catches for just 46 yards.
The majority of the receptions went to the running backs. Jones had seven catches for 75 yards while Tra Carson made four catches for 18 yards. Fullback Danny Vitale also had a catch.
It’s still only Valdes-Scantling’s second season, and he’s a talented player who has the potential to be very good in this offense. His speed makes him a deep threat, but too often it doesn’t seem he’s on the same page as Rodgers. Still, that should improve over time.
But right now, after five weeks, the Packers’ depth at wide receiver behind Davante Adams is a slight concern. Will the team look to trade for a receiver this month before the deadline? It has to at least be a slight possibility. And perhaps a telling sign is that four receivers tried out with the Packers on Monday, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.
