Chris Jones – DT

It’s possible Chris Jones has already played his final game for the Kansas City Chiefs. Jones was franchise-tagged earlier this offseason, but he hinted in a tweet that he might not play this season. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported in June that Jones wants a new deal worth $21 million per year.

I wrote about three dream trade targets for the Packers, with Jones being one of them. It’s certainly possible Jones will be traded at some point if the Chiefs can’t work out a long-term deal, but there’s also the possibility he becomes a free agent next offseason.

For the Packers to bring in Jones, whether via a trade or signing him as a free agent next offseason, they’d likely need to free up some cap room. There’s no doubt that it wouldn’t be easy to make it happen given the fact they also have star players such as David Bakhtiari and Kenny Clark with expiring contracts. But if they were to lose Clark, GM Brian Gutekunst could decide to go all-in on an All-Pro defensive tackle like Jones.

The only way the Packers would make a move is if they go all-in for the 2021 season, perhaps one last opportunity to win a championship with Aaron Rodgers. Either way, it won’t be easy for the Chiefs to re-sign their star defensive tackle.
