Mike Pettine will live to fight another day for the Packers

Winner #2: Mike Pettine

Coming into this game, I thought that another poor performance might be enough to give Mike Pettine the boot for the rest of the year. Say what you will about him but the defense played very well overall.

The defense as a whole was playing a lot better. They seemed to get more pressure and even got an interception. Za’Darius Smith got the lone sack in the game, while his Smith bro counterpart Preston was responsible for a Raven Greene interception with his pressure on Nick Mullens.

Another positive on defense is that they did a much better job against the run. Jerrick McKinnon was able to get a few decent runs against this defense but never anything huge. The rest of the San Fransisco backs couldn’t get much going against the Packers defense either.

A big story coming out of the game was that Jaire Alexander entered the concussion protocol and was eventually ruled out. Obviously, this is something to keep an eye on because that is a huge loss considering they are already without Kevin King.

While this performance was nice to see, it honestly doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. With the level of talent that was on the field for the 49ers, the Packers really had no excuse to not play at a high level on Thursday.
