Louisville Cardinals defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin (94) sacks Wake Forest Demon Deacons quarterback John Wolford (10).

My Pick for the Packers: Lorenzo Mauldin (Rounds 3-4)

Mauldin’s fit in Green Bay’s scheme is undeniable, and this would be a great pairing for both parties.

Mauldin’s best fit in the NFL is as 3-4 rush backer, where he can generate pressure off the edge from a two-point stance–much like he did successfully at Louisville as a two-year starter.

Mauldin’s game is just relentless. His style of play resembles Clay Matthews. He has similar measurables (6-4, 259), can make plays in pursuit, and plays with a fire that would be a welcoming sight on a defense that needs to create more havoc.

Possessing only adequate speed will cause Mauldin to drop in the draft, but the former Louisville pass rusher is a tough downhill player who finds ways to make plays on the field.

Mauldin is also a high-character guy who has a good reputation for being a hard worker and very coachable. These are all traits Green Bay really values when drafting players.

Despite having more pressing needs on their roster, don’t be surprised if the Packers take a guy like Mauldin with one of their first three picks.

Julius Peppers will probably retire within the next couple of seasons and both Mike Neal and Nick Perry could hit the free agent market after next season.

Green Bay would be wise to secure the future of the most important position on their defense.
