A painful Packers WR trade now feels inevitable after latest rumor

There may be too much demand, and the Packers have the supply.

The NFL Trade Deadline is not always the most fun out of all the professional leagues, but supply and demand might change things a significant bit in 2025. The Green Bay Packers could be at the center of it all.

After striking a blockbuster deal right before the beginning of the season with the Dallas Cowboys for DPOY candidate Micah Parsons, proving they are ready and willing to deal, the Packers and general manager Brian Gutekunst might be getting a lot of calls from teams about his wide receiver room.

There are a number of significant rumors floating around right now that teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and New England Patriots are interested in acquiring receiver help (among other teams), and the player the Packers could part with might disappoint the fan base a bit.

Packers may get an offer they can't refuse on a receiver nobody wants to lose

At this stage of the season, it really doesn't feel like the Packers would move on from Romeo Doubs. He has been the center of so many trade rumors over the last year or two, and Matt LaFleur has been bullish about keeping Doubs.

To his credit, Doubs has also responded in a big way and looks a lot more like a second-contract player than he does a trade deadline candidate.

The Packers also invested in Christian Watson beyond just this year. Before he signed a one-year deal to essentially prove himself in Green Bay in 2026, Watson might have made sense as a flyer option for teams whenever he comes back healthy. But the Packers are invested in his talent and the variance he brings to the table as a big, athletic, outside receiver with proven big-play ability (when healthy).

The process of elimination leaves Dontayvion Wicks, a third-year player who had been awesome for the Packers as an extra weapon in the passing game over his first two seasons.

He had nine touchdowns in his first two years in the NFL on fewer than 80 total receptions. With his YAC ability and the fact that he's under contract next year on his rookie deal still, it makes sense that he will be one of the most coveted young receivers at the deadline.

And the Packers should be able to exploit that.

Right before the start of the season, the Denver Broncos traded second-year player Devaughn Vele, who is nearly four years older than Wicks, for fourth- and seventh-round picks. The Packers should be able to get at least that, if not more, for Wicks.

It would be a bit of a painful move to get rid of Wicks, but the Packers have so much depth at receiver right now, they have to consider how they can restock the draft war chest after the Parsons trade, as well as truly maximize the value of the players on the roster.

Given the supply of receivers available and the overall demand right now, this is (unfortunately) the perfect time to let Wicks spread his wings on another team.
